About the Artwork 🌸
Kitagawa Utamaro (ca. 1753–1806) is celebrated as the greatest master of bijin-ga — portraits of beautiful women — in the history of ukiyo-e. This nocturnal winter scene, created around 1797, captures a geisha mid-step through falling snow, her figure a study in grace and solitude. The stillness of the night, the softness of the snow, and the quiet dignity of the subject make this one of Utamaro's most evocative works. This design is sourced from a public domain work held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
